Undergraduate
Research Opportunities

Undergraduate participation is an important part of our research program. We have worked hard to provide students with a laboratory environment where they can experience all facets of scientific research. Our approach has been to extensively train new students in modern molecular techniques and then to tailor individual research projects to their ultimate research and educational goals. We encourage students to take responsibility for all aspects of their projects, including eventual data analysis and manuscript preparation and, within reason, give students the freedom to make mistakes. Present and former students have been awarded research fellowships and attended major scientific meetings. Many have gone on to graduate or professional school.

Support for research and travel:

Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the undergraduate research opportunities at UPR-RP. Biology 4990 allows student to receive course credit for laboratory work. In addition, there are a large number of programs (see below) that provide monetary support in the form of a stipend and funds for research supplies and travel. These programs include:

Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE-SUBE)

Crest-Center for Applied Tropical Ecology and Conservation (CREST)

Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP)

McNair Program

Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network in Puerto Rico (PR-BRIN)
