Located in the heart of historic Rio Piedras, the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (UPR-RP) is the oldest and largest campus of the UPR system. UPR-RP has a rich history of teaching and research excellence. It is generally recognized as the top-rated center for higher education in Puerto Rico and enrolls over 20,000 undergraduate and 3,700 graduate students. The University possesses all essential core infrastructure for state-of-the-art genetic/genomic research. This fact, coupled with the University's proximity to tropical marine and terrestrial habitat, central position in the Caribbean, and strong ties with Central and South America places UPR-RP in a the unique position to become the dominant research center in tropical ecology, genetics, and conservation. Spanish is the major language of the island, but English is also widely spoken. Students are encouraged to be fluent in both languages. |

| Laboratory- Julio Garcia Diaz building [207, 208]: Our lab occupies approximately 1000 ft2 and is well equip more molecular genetic work. In addition to key lab equipment we have 8 Macintosh computers, 3 PCs, and various peripherals. All computers are equipped programs for word processing, databasing, data analysis, and graphics. | ||
| Sequencing and Genotyping Facility- Julio Garcia Diaz building [213]: Situated in adjacent lab space the Sequencing and Genotyping facility houses an ABI 377 and MegaBACE 500 for high throughput sequencing and single nucleotide polymorphism analysis (SNP) and a Li-Cor NEN Global DNA Analyzer System and Odyssey Infrared Imaging System for microsatellite and amplified-fragment length (AFLP) analysis. We are in the process of upgrading the facility by i) increasing the throughput of our capillary machine from 48 to 96 samples, ii) purchasing dedicated servers for data back-up and storage, and iii) developing laboratory information management systems for project-specific data-analytical and organizational needs. | ||
| Microarry Facility, Julio Garcia Diaz Building [108]: The Microarray facility was established under NIH-COBRE grant (NIH) and is under the direction of Dr. Sandra Peņa. The facility has an Affymetrix GMS 417 Arrayer and GMS 428 Array Scanner for preparation of custom-designed glass and membrane cDNA arrays; a Bio Rad I Cyler Real Time PCR System for quantitative PCR; and an Arcturus Laser Capture Microdissection System for excising specific cells for gene expression analysis. In addition, the facility includes a microscope with fluorescent imaging capabilities, a CCD camera, and computer workstation. | ||
| Bioinformatics Laboratory, Julio Garcia Diaz Building [215]: The Bioinformatic laboratory was established under ... | ||
| Heliconius Rearing Facility, Botanical Jardins, Rio Piedras: We have two greenhouses and ample planting beds at the nearby Botanical Gardens for rearing butterflies. Although the bulk of our research focuses on H. erato, we currently have APHIS permits to import and raise H. melpomene and H. cydno as well. | ||
